Sonya Maldar is a Senior Governance Adviser at the UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). She is currently Deputy Head of the Democratic Governance Department, leading central policy and programming on democratic governance for the FCDO.
Between 2019-22 Sonya was a Governance Adviser for the FCDO/DFID in Nigeria. There she worked on the Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL) programme, leading implementation of thinking and working politically approaches and the programme’s learning agenda. Before her role with PERL, she was an advisor for the UK’s Conflict Security and Stability Fund (CSSF) in Nigeria, leading programming on security and justice and stabilisation. Between 2016-2019, Sonya was based in Jamaica where she was responsible for DFID’s portfolio on citizen security and justice and public sector delivery.
Before joining DIFD, Sonya was an independent consultant, first in Malawi and then Uganda. She specialised in the areas of citizen accountability, civil society accountability and extractive industries accountability, and completed projects for a range of donors and INGOs organisations.
Sonya’s development career started in the NGO sector, with stints working in research and advocacy for Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Anti-Slavery International and CAFOD. She also spent two years as a VSO volunteer in Nigeria between 2002-2004.
